Former Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company musician, Hannah Mackenzie, appointed as Principal Second Trumpet in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

THE Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to announce the appointment of Hannah Mackenzie as Principal Second Trumpet. Her 1st performance in the role will be:- Thursday, 30 November 2023.

Hannah was raised on the Wirral and joined the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company at 16 years old. The Youth Company is the largest community of young musicians in the North West created to develop young musical talent. During her time in Youth Company, Hannah won the Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition and performed as a soloist.

Hannah graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2016, where she studied for her Master's Degree with Rhys Owens and Murray Greig. Prior to this she completed a Postgraduate Diploma at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and an undergraduate degree in Music, at Lancaster University. Since graduating, Hannah has worked throughout the UK and abroad as a freelance musician and a regular concerto soloist. She is also a passionate educator, teaching in several Schools across Merseyside. She has recently set up a thriving youth group, Wirral Youth Brass, alongside Simon Cowen who is the Principal Trombone of the orchestra.

On her appointment to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Hannah said:- "The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra was the 1st orchestra I ever heard live as a young girl, so I am both thrilled and honoured to have been offered the Principal Second Trumpet chair in an orchestra that is cherished by so many. I'm looking forward to joining the brass section, the musicians in which (both past and present) I owe a great deal. They have provided invaluable guidance since graduating and I certainly wouldn't be the musician I am today without them. The opportunities that I was given as part of the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra helped shape me into the musician I am today, allowing me to explore a diverse musical repertoire whilst building my confidence both on and off stage."

Michael Eakin, Chief Executive of Liverpool Philharmonic, said:- "On behalf of the entire Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra family, I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to Hannah. This is a particularly exciting appointment as Hannah 1st joined us through the Youth Orchestra. The goal of Youth Company is to develop young musical talent, offer career guidance and fostering a thriving and welcoming community of young people and world class professional musicians. It is wonderful to see the way in which the Liverpool Philharmonic has played a part in Hannah's early musical development and now in her professional career. Hannah's remarkable talent and passion for music is a wonderful addition to our ensemble, and we are confident that she will contribute to the extraordinary performances that our audiences have come to expect."

The award winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is the UK's oldest continuing professional symphony orchestra. The origins of the Orchestra's concert series date back to the formation of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic concert society by a group of Liverpool music lovers n 1840. Domingo Hindoyan became Chief Conductor of the Orchestra in 2021, joining a distinguished line of musicians who have led the Orchestra during its illustrious history. The Orchestra performs over 70 concerts each year in Liverpool and has long been a unique ambassador for the City through an extensive touring schedule throughout the UK and internationally, and through broadcasts and recordings.

Mental Health Intensive Support Team scoops prestigious national award

A local NHS mental health team, that provides support for some of the most vulnerable people in our society, has won a national award for the quality of their care.

Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust's (CWP) Mental Health Intensive Support Team (MHIST) provides rehabilitation services for people with complex needs. The highly specialised team specifically support people with their transition from Hospital to living back at home in their own communities.

In what has been a very successful year for the team, they recently picked up the Team of the Year prize at the annual Royal College of Psychiatry (RCPsych) awards; held in London. This followed on from them also picking up Team of the Year at the Patient Engagement Network National Awards (PENNA) in October.

Jo Watts, associate Director of operations for specialist mental health said:- "On behalf of the Trust I would like to congratulate the team on their success. This is the culmination of all of the fabulous work that the team do to support people to live their lives in the least restrictive environment. This supports better outcomes and most importantly, a better quality of life for people accessing the service."

MHIST have a number of stated aims include meeting the needs of the local population, improve quality of care and improve patient experience by reducing the need for readmittance to Hospital. The clinical model was developed in collaboration with Liverpool John Moore's University and was informed by feedback from patients, carers and staff. The team are made up of a range different health professionals including psychiatrists, mental health nurses and occupational therapists, among others.

Among their outcomes for those accessing the service are; a reduction in people detained under the Mental Health Act, a reduction in out of area placements, an increase in people in employment or full time education, and over 60% of people supported by MHIST are living independently in the community.

Tina Hawthorne is a former CWP service user who now works for the team as a Peer Support Worker. She said:- "The MHIST team have really built that bridge between the Hospital and home that is really needed within adult mental health services; as it can be a challenge moving out of Hospital. I wish a team like this had existed sooner and it feels like we're shutting any:- 'revolving door' that may exist where people repeatedly need inpatient support."

Louise Gill, head of clinical service; complex care, said:- "I'm really proud to lead the MHIST team, it's great to see such positive outcomes, great team work and lots of collaborative working. We always try to share our expertise with others and it is really great to see the team acknowledged in this way for all of their hard work and support they provide to vulnerable people."

Jo continued:- "I'm delighted to celebrate with the team for all of their hard work and the well deserved accolades they have received. I just want to say a huge thank you to them all for their contribution to helping people within our community."
