Liverpool welcomes in Year 4722 - Part 1

LIVERPOOL held its annual Chinese New Year celebrations on  Sunday,  11 February 2024, with dragon, unicorn, and lion dancing, plus lots more... This event is the biggest Chinese New Year Celebration in the UK and that shouldn't be a surprise, as Liverpool's Chinese Community is the oldest Chinese Community in Europe, and currently the 2nd biggest in the world, outside of China.

This years event was put on with the Liverpool Chinese Business Association and Liverpool City Council. The celebrations where cantered around the City's original Chinatown area of Nelson Street and its impressive, welcoming Paifang arch.  On a side note, did you know that the Arch was built in 1994, and it is the biggest in the World, outside of China? It was built to commemorate the twinning of Liverpool with Shanghai in the same year. With the ceremonial arch having 200 dragons and 5 roofs, this impressive structure stands 13.5 metres tall. Anyway, the stunning backdrop, along with red lanterns, bilingual street signs, and other Chinese style road decorations really gives it a very unusual feel, as you watch the cultural celebrations.

Also, thought the weekend, fire dancers and a floating dragon could be seen at the Royal Albert Dock in the evenings. Other events also were held at the Bombed Out Church and St Gourges Hall, plus with in the Black-E and others also held additional activities.

You can see more photos on the next 2 pages, within this edition, also in our next weekly edition, we will have our full video coverage!
