Southport hosted the North West's biggest Armed Forces Day celebration

ON Sunday, 30 June 2024 both the Royal British Legion (RBL) and SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity, put on .the biggest Armed Forces Day celebration in the North West of England. The event started in Southport Town Center, with a Drumhead Service that celebrated British Armed Forces Personnel, both past and present. 

Then a Parade was held with all the Regimental standard bearers from the area, along with both serving and veterans personnel from all the military services. The Parade ended with a salute, taken by the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside Mark Blundell and Mayor of Sefton, Cllr June Burns. Among those taking part were The the Liverpool Scottish Regimental Association Pipes and Drums; The Band of the 4th Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment; Merseyside Army Cadet Force; 281 Southport Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets; and Southport Sea Cadets.

Following the Parade an inspection took place. Then came the live entertainment and other activities that went on throughout the day. These activities included:-

  • Live music.
  • Fairground.
  • Armed Forces Day activities inside The Atkinson (next to Southport Town Hall).
  • Ukrainian choir.
  • Craft stalls.
  • Military vehicles.
  • Armed Forces Stands.
  • Food stands.
  • Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Bar.
  • Paintball range.

 


If you don't already know, Armed Forces Day in the UK takes place on the last weekend each June. It is a chance to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving personnel to service families, veterans and cadets.
