Historic win for Labour in Southport as the nation turns red
'WE did it,'
Starmer said to the nation as Labour wins the General Election, the
results within the Liverpool City Region also reflect the national
results. These results also include a history win for Labour, in
Southport.
Despite recent boundary changes that could have made it more likely
to have gone to the Conservative Party in the past, the constituency
has never before had a Labour Member of Parliament until now.
At the Southport Count Patrick Brian Hurley convincingly won the
seat from the Conservative Party's Damian Moore on an unusual
election night.
Despite a slight delay due to a recounting at the request of the
Green Party, the night went very smoothly and far quicker than
planned, with the result being announced at around 3:15 am.
Later in a press release sent to us the Conservative Group Leader on Sefton Council, Mike Prendergast, has offered his congratulations to new MP, Patrick Hurley, and paid tribute to Damien Moore. Councillor Prendergast said:- "Firstly, I want to congratulate Patrick Hurley on his election on Thursday on be½ of the Conservative Group on Sefton Council. I also wish to pay tribute to our outgoing MP, Damien Moore. For 7 years he has represented us in Westminster and stood up for the people of Southport against a Labour run Sefton Council that very often, does not act in the best interests of Southport. He helped deliver unprecedented levels of investment in Southport with funding for the new theatre and convention center that, when completed, will be a driver of economic growth for our local economy. Damien and his hardworking staff have also dealt with thousands of pieces of casework, helping local people with all manner of issues. Damien and his team should be proud of the work they did to help so many across the area. On be½ of the Conservative Group on Sefton Council, I want to offer him and his team our sincerest thanks for their hard work, dedication, and tireless efforts in advocating for Southport in Westminster. Conservatives in Southport will continue to hold Sefton Council to account. We want to see our Pier back open again, see Children's Social Services improve, see Southport's Lord Street rejuvenated, see our heritage preserved, and get better value for money from Sefton Council for local residents and businesses."
In Bootle (Sefton) Labour's Peter Dowd held the seat, taking 68.7%
share of the votes, with Reform UK coming in second with 12.2% of
the votes.
Sefton Central is also a Labour Hold with Bill Esterson remaining in
place as the areas MP.
The rest of the results for the Liverpool City Region are as follows:-
In Liverpool, Labour held its 5 seats, with 62.91% of the vote, but Reform UK surprised many by getting 11.53%, Green Party took 10.51%, the Liberal Democrats got 5.16%, but the Conservatives took 4.67%. The other parties made up the rest of the votes.

In the local By-Election in
Liverpool, it is worth adding that Clubmoor East was also a Labour
Hold with Richard McLean being elected as Councillor, with a turnout
of 47.6% Also in another By-Election, it was again a Labour win,
with Declan Henry being elected as Councillor for Fazakerly North,
with a majority of 1,340 votes, and a turnout of 56.7%. And the 3rd
By-Ellection of the night for Liverpool was for Broadgreen. As with
the others, it was a Labour Hold with a majority of just 619%,
Making Hayley Anne Todd the duly elected Councillor for that Ward.

59.7%.

St Helens stays Labour.
Labour's David Edward Baines being elected as the MP for St Helens
North. St Helens South and Whiston has Labour's Marie Rimmer duly
elected. St Helens Windle Ward, has Labour's Lisa Preston as their
MP.
A new MP has been elected in Knowsley to continue Labour's perfect
record for this parliamentary seat, which was created in 2010 and
has been in the hands of Labour ever since.
This year it was not just parliamentary constituency boundaries in the Liverpool City Region that had changed but 90% of constituencies had been changed since the last election in 2019. This meant it was harder to estimate what the outcome of the final result would have been, but it was clear that Labour would take over from very early on. Locally despite the polls and predictions, by both our selves and in other media outlets, Reform UK did not do as well as expected, but across the board, they are definitely a danger to the Conservatives and helped to split the Conservative vote, allowing the other parties a chance and gaining 4 seats in the process. Equally, nationally the Green Party achieved the best result in its history, with with 4 MPs being elected, bringing its total in line with Reform UK. Interestingly, The Electoral Reform Society have found that the 2024 election was the most disproportionate vote share on record, after using complex statistical scoring systems to compare the results to others in the UK's election history. This again raises interesting questions about using proportional representation within our electoral systen, to best represent and reflect subgroups within our nations electorate. Nationally the Labour have now got the overall majority of seats in the House, and have pushed the Conservatives into second place with Lib Dems in 3rd place.
