THE unique contributions of 8 individuals to Liverpool and beyond are set to be rewarded with 1 of the City's highest prizes.

Professor John Ashton, Reverend Canon Dr Crispin Pailing, Leroy Cooper and Chrissie Byrne as well as the 4 members of The Real Thing have all been nominated to be made Citizen of Honour.

The nominations will be put forward for approval at an Extraordinary Meeting of the Full Council on Wednesday 24 July.

Professor John Ashton attended the former Quarry Bank High School, before studying at Newcastle University Medical School and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He held positions at the University of Southampton, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of Liverpool School of Medicine and was also the Regional Director of Public Health for North-West England for 13 years. His many achievements include:- setting up 1 of the world's 1st syringe exchange programmes in Liverpool, founding the Liverpool Public Health Observatory and initiating the World Health Organisation's Healthy Cities Project. Professor Ashton was honoured with a CBE in 2000.

Dr Crispin Pailing was made Rector of Liverpool in 2014 having been ordained in 2003, after graduating in classics from Oxford University. Before taking up his position at Liverpool Parish Church, he was Vicar of Perry Barr in Birmingham. Dr Pailing resigned from his post in Liverpool earlier this year and held his last service in the City in June. He was made MBE in the King's New Year's Honours List.

One of Liverpool's most passionate campaigners for the City's green spaces, Chrissie Byrne was the chair and organiser of the Friends of Walton Hall Park where she led campaigns to protect the park from development and also supported other friends of parks groups across the City. Chrissie passed away in 2023.

Lord Mayor of Liverpool Cllr Richard Kemp nominated both Professor Ashton and Chrissie Byrne for their honours.

For over 40 years, photographer Leroy Cooper captured life in Liverpool, especially the Black community in L8, leaving an archive of over 250,000 images when he died in 2023. His arrest and subsequent treatment by the police in 1981 when he was a student was part of an incident that led to the 1st Toxteth uprising. As well as a photographer, Leroy also became known as a performance poet and DJ and exhibitions of his work were shown at the Unity Theatre and the Museum of Liverpool. Leroy Cooper's posthumous nomination was made by Sonia Bassey MBE.

The Real Thing formed in Liverpool in 1972. Best known for their hits You To Me Are Everything, Can't Get By Without You and Can You Feel the Force, the group remains the UK's most successful Black group. They were also the 1st Black British soul group to have a UK Number 1 and to appear on Top of the Pops. Chris Amoo and Dave Smith both still perform as The Real Thing, following the passing of their band mates Eddy Amoo and Ray Lake.

The Real Thing have been nominated by Liverpool City Council's Head of UNESCO City of Music Kevin McManus.

Citizens of Honour were introduced in 2008 to complement the higher honour of Freedom of the City. It acknowledges people who have made significant, exceptional or unique contributions to enrich the image of Liverpool and/or its citizens.

Lord Mayor of Liverpool Cllr Richard Kemp said:- "This group of nominees shows the breadth of talent that Liverpool fosters and the impact that it has not just on its own communities, but on the wider world. From Public Health, to entertainment and art, and to community campaigning, it is humbling to be able to formally recognise their achievements and to welcome them into the impressive and growing family of Citizens of Honour. The ceremonies where the recipients are invited to receive their scrolls are 1 of the great honours of the role of Lord Mayor and I am immensely looking forward to meeting them, or the families of posthumous recipients, later in the year."

Northern issues plea to Headteachers to help tackle:- 'persistent, calculated fare evasion' by students

NORTHERN has written to the Headteachers of 11 Secondary Schools and academies across the North of England with a plea to help them tackle what they call:- 'persistent, calculated fare evasion' by students.

As the end of the academic year draws near, the train operator says it's time for Headteachers to work with them to combat the issue.

It follows a catalogue of incidents since September 2023, including:- students travelling without tickets, ticket fraud and anti social behaviour as well as verbal and physical assaults on conductors and Station staff.

Behaviour at some Stations has been so bad that Northern has had to request support from British Transport Police to maintain order.

The Schools that Northern has written to are (in alphabetical order):-

  • Bingley Grammar in West Yorkshire.

  • Hazel Grove High School in Greater Manchester.

  • Highfields College in Greater Manchester.

  • Knutsford High School in Cheshire.

  • Nunthorpe Academy in North Yorkshire.

  • Rainhill High School in Merseyside.

  • Reddish Vale High School in Greater Manchester.

  • Sutton Academy in Merseyside.

  • Turton High School in Greater Manchester.

  • Ulverston Victoria High School in Cumbria.

  • Wilmslow High School in Cheshire.

Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, said:- "What we're seeing is persistent, calculated fare evasion. With Secondary School students, fare evasion incidents tend to occur on relatively short journeys between rural and suburban Stations which are not barrier controlled. That, combined with the limited time conductors have to carry out ticket checks, emboldens students to travel without a ticket."

However, in recent months, Northern says incidents have had an increasingly anti-social element to them, with reports of verbal and physical assaults on train crew and Station staff. Powles added:- "We've seen students climb on Station Canopies and assault Station staff in order to avoid ticket checks; it's completely unacceptable. That's why we're calling on Headteachers to help us identify repeat offenders."

The train operator is already working with the Headteacher of Honley High School, in West Yorkshire, and says a joined up approach really makes a difference. Teachers have been deployed to Honley, the local Station, to help identify students and ensure Station staff are able to carry out ticket checks without a risk to their safety. James Meads, assistant Headteacher of Honley High School, said:- "As part of the School's on-going work with Northern we have deployed members of teaching staff to the local railway Station to help identify students that have attempted to fare evade on their commute to School. As well as raising the topic of fare evasion in School assemblies we have also contacted the parents of students to make them aware - and we will continue to support Northern on this issue when the new academic year gets underway in September."

In January, Northern urged parents to:- 'lock in' a discount worth 75% off the cost of their child's commute to School via its Under 16 Education Season Ticket scheme.

Northern has also invested in the largest network of ticket infrastructure of any train operator in the country, with students able to buy their ticket from the Northern app, website, ticket offices or 1 of more than 600 ticket vending machines across the network.

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 Stations across the North of England.
