Sutton Grange makes resident's dream come true

Joyce and General Manager Fran with the Sandgrounders.

RESIDENTS and sisters, Joyce, Elizabeth, and Janet, at Sutton Grange had always wanted a chance to cherish their fond memories of 2 wheeled adventures from their youth, so staff at the home made their wish a reality proving the old adage, it's never too late.

The 3 ladies have lived at Sutton Grange for almost 3 years and are beloved by staff and residents alike. Staff at the home were delighted to be a part of making their dream come true, as they knew how much it meant to them, and they all wanted to be there to see the smile on the ladies' faces when their dream was realised. Alison Wareing, Activities Coordinator at Sutton Grange, 1st found out about the dream of Joyce, Elizabeth and Janet not long after they moved in and, ever since then, she has been dedicated to helping them achieve it.

Residents and the Scooter Club.

The Southport Sandgrounders Scooter Club responded to a plea on social media for any local scooter clubs to come forward and help the home make this dream come true for the ladies. A visit was confirmed for:- Wednesday, 2 October 2024, and the warm camaraderie displayed throughout the evening was palpable, as Joyce, Elizabeth, and Janet engaged with the visiting scooter club members, recounting the restrictions they faced as young women. They shared amusing anecdotes about the era, particularly emphasizing how their mother disapproved of ladies wearing trousers; a fact that added a humorous twist to their remarkable stories.

Among the various scooters showcased by the Sandgrounders, the oldest model was a 1966 Vespa, which resonated with Joyce as she fondly remembered her rides on a similar bike. The Lambretta was produced in the 1980s, evoked memories for Janet of her youthful escapades, evoking nostalgia that transcended the decades.

Joyce, at 99 years old, was the eldest of the trio. Known for her adventurous spirit, she rode her trusty Vespa to work for 9 months of the year, reserving the remaining 3 months for bus rides. Her zest for life shone through as she reminisced about her daily journeys, sharing tales of the sights and sounds she encountered while riding through the streets of Guildford.

Elizabeth admiring the scooters.

Her sister Elizabeth, 97, followed closely behind in feistiness and had her own stories to tell. As a solicitor's secretary, she would often ride to Guildford, managing to navigate traffic and deadlines with grace. Elizabeth fondly recalled the days when she would ride her bike, clearly remembering the thrill of the wind in her hair and the freedom of the open road.

Janet was desperate for a ride!

Then there was Janet, the youngest at 92. She added her own brand of excitement to the day, riding a Lambretta during her younger years. Full of curiosity, Janet bombarded the Southport Sandgrounders with questions about the scooters, eager to relive the experiences of her youth. Her enthusiasm was infectious, leaving everyone in the room feeling rejuvenated by her passion.

The evening was a celebration not only of scooters but of family, heritage, and cherished memories. As the sisters connected with the scooter enthusiasts, they reflected on their journey from Sussex to Sutton Grange to be closer to family—a decision that has allowed them to share experiences and stories that continue to inspire those around them.

In response to this wonderful surprise, Joyce, 97, said:- "I was on the verge of tears. It is such an amazing feeling to know that such a loving group of people care so much about me that they helped me to live out a dream; and I didn't even ask."

Joyce, Elizabeth, and Janet's adventurous spirits and love for life serve as a wonderful reminder that age is but a number; what truly matters are the memories we cherish and the bonds we create along the way. The encounter with the Southport Sandgrounders will surely remain etched in their minds, sparking joy and laughter long after the scooter engines have quieted down.

Fran Lally, General Manager at the home, said:- "We believe that every moment is worth cherishing. We want everyone we care for to know how important they are to us here at Sutton Grange. It is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team here in making our residents' dreams come true. It was wonderful to see how happy the sisters were; and the staff loved being a part of this as well."
