Demolition of Southport Theatre and Floral Hall is ½ way

THE demolition of derelict Southport Theatre and the Floral Hall is now ½ way, and the project to build the new £73 million Marine Lake Events Centre (MLEC) is on schedule to start in early 2025.

If you go past the demolition site you will see that the Theatre section of the facility is now a pile of rubble that is being separated into its constituent parts for both disposal and recycling by contractors DSM Group.

As the clearance of 1st stage takes place, it will mean a slight delay before the specialist team progresses on to demolish the Floral Hall part of the structure. The most delicate part of the project will come in part 3, as the workers will have to remove the joining structure of the Floral Hall extension to the 4 star, purpose built hotel, without damaging the still operating Hotel's structure.

Background...  If you are unaware, the former Ramada Plaza Hotel, was built 2007 and opened in 2008, as part of what was hoped to be a major boost to the local economy, as part of a major rejuvenation project for the seaside town. That project included a facelift and upgrade to both the Southport Theatre and the Floral Hall, which were renamed the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre (STCC). Sadly, the redevelopment of the complex, which included the building of a Genting Casino, along with a Hungry Horse failed to deliver the trade both Sefton Council and the businesses involved in the project had expected. 8 years on, in 2016, the Hotel was the acquired by Bliss Investment Partners (BIP), who signed a 250 year lease on the Hotel. The group also took on the running of the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre in the process. Frustratingly for BIP the take up of the Southport Promenade development's vacant sections remained under used, and unleased.  Then, in April 2020, BIP was plunged into administration, due to the effects of the UK's Covid19 Pandemic, with £18m being owed to creditors. The loss of BIP resulted in the parliament closure of the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre.  Then after the Pandemic, the Casino and the Hungry Horse closed. despite this the Hotel remains operational, but both the Theatre and Floral Hall buildings never re-opened and had quickly fell into disrepair. As a result, Sefton Council who had taken back ownership of the property deemed to be unrealistic to patch it up, and opted to take the opportunity to replace the aging 1930's and 1970's structures with a brand-new state of the art facility.
