Aldi calls on shoppers in Merseyside to nominate local charities to receive donation

ALDI is calling on shoppers in Merseyside to nominate local charities, community groups and food banks to receive a share of its Winter Fund. The supermarket's Winter Fund will see it donate £10,000 to charities nationwide in an effort to support communities in the lead up to Christmas. The nominations will be reviewed by a panel of Aldi's representatives, and the chosen charities will receive cash donations to help relieve some of the pressure during heightened demand over winter.

To nominate a charity, shoppers can submit their entry via email to:- AldiWinterFund@CityPress.Co.UK. The email should include:- the name and location of the organisation, as well as a short summary on why they deserve to win.

Liz Fox, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, said:- "The winter period can be an incredibly challenging time for many people across the country and we are committed to doing everything we can to support those in need. We hope our shoppers can help us identify charities that could benefit from this donation to continue the incredible work that they do to help their local communities."

Entries open on:- Monday, 11 November 2024 and close on:- Suniday, 24 November 2024. For more information and T&Cs, visit:- AldiPressCentre.Co.UK. Shoppers can also donate food to local charities, food banks and community groups via the community donation points in Aldi stores nationwide.

Letter to the Editor:- "Sir Trevor McDonald on Youth Homelessness Crisis"

"THIS winter, more young people than ever before in the UK are facing the heartbreaking reality of homelessness. Record numbers are without a safe place to sleep, a warm meal, or the most basic security we often take for granted. Every day, over 350 young people become homeless. It's a shocking statistic and 1 that demands our urgent attention. As President of youth homelessness charity for Depaul UK, I am reaching out to urge your readers to come together and make a difference this winter. Depaul UK is working tirelessly to help:- 16 to 25 year olds, who are experiencing homelessness. Through the generosity of ordinary people, our trained Nightstop volunteers offer a spare room to young people in need, so they don't sleep rough. A warm welcome, a home-cooked meal, and a safe place to rest for the night; these small comforts make all the difference to a young person with nowhere to turn. But we cannot do it alone, and the charity needs more volunteers, and support to help us continue this work. Let's not turn our backs on these young people in need. Together, we can offer them hope and a safe place to sleep." Sincerely, Sir Trevor McDonald, President, Depaul UK

⅔ of children in Liverpool face going to bed cold this winter

RESEARCH reveals almost of all children in Liverpool are facing cold bedtimes this winter, with 63% of parents worried their children will be cold at home when temperatures drop. The data shows almost a third of residents in Liverpool (31%) cannot keep their house warm when it's cold, no matter what they try. As a result, 25% of parents have admit they've had to put their children to bed in a cold room and a further 49% worry the temperature of their house is bad for their family's health on cold days.

The research, conducted by the home heating experts at SpeedComfort, reveals the scale of British homes' cold crisis, with homes across the country falling short of recommended healthy temperatures.

On average, Brits anticipate the temperatures inside their homes will drop to 12.8°C this winter. This is 5 degrees colder than the recommended healthy temperature for adults to live and sleep in (18°C) and 3 degrees colder than the minimum safe temperature for infants to sleep in (16°C), according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The impact of this on families across the UK is significant. According to the NHS, consistently being cold can have a detrimental impact on mental and physical health.

The latest findings support this. 43% claim being cold at home causes them physical discomfort, over a quarter (28%) say they're ill more often when it's cold, and 41% report feeling down when they're cold.

In addition to affecting families, the research found that cold temperatures are set to have a big impact on the UK's most vulnerable citizens, with older people most likely to be cold at home this winter (37%).

This is concerning, given that they are more susceptible to the mental and physical effects of the cold. Half of over 65s say the cold causes discomfort and almost the same proportion (49%) say it makes them feel low (8% higher than the average Brit).

Wouter Heuterman, CEO of SpeedComfort, comments:- "With the cost of living crisis continuing to affect so many families across Liverpool, it's heartbreaking to see that so many residents are worried about keeping their families safe and warm at home this winter. The cold has a huge impact on how we feel both physically and emotionally. For families with children and vulnerable people, the impact of cold temperatures is even further exacerbated. So, if you're worried about the health of your family this winter, it's well worth considering alternative ways of keeping your home warm when temperatures drop. To help with this, we've created a guide for staying warm without increasing energy usage this winter."
