2024 What on Earth! Schools Quiz Challenge congratulates finalists, the Belvedere School from Liverpool!

ON Friday, 29 November 2024, What on Earth! hosted its 3rd national What on Earth! Schools Quiz Challenge, in association with media partner The i Paper, aimed at identifying the School with the best general knowledge in the country.

Hosted by Christopher Lloyd, author and founder of What on Earth!, he was thrilled to invite The Belvedere Academy in Liverpool to join the 7 other finalist teams to Stationers' Hall, London for the thrilling live final. Out of around 300 team entries from across the UK, the final 8 Schools, 4 junior and 4 senior teams, faced stiff competition over the last few weeks as they furiously prepared for the championship and took part in the online quiz rounds to see if they would win their place at the final quiz day.

Schools and home educated children across the UK signed up for free and entered a 4 person team to compete. All quiz questions were inspired by topics covered in past editions of What on Earth! Magazine, which features regular content from What on Earth! nonfiction books, including:- mind boggling and amazing facts, extraordinary feats and awe-inspiring true-life stories. Each participating team received free access to past digital editions of the magazine to help them become quiz champions.

The 4 finalist teams in the junior School's category (8; 11 year olds) were Alwoodley Primary School in Leeds; Edge Grove School in Watford; Littlegarth School in Colchester; Ryde School with Upper Chine on the Isle of Wight and the 4 finalist teams for the senior School's category (11; 14 year olds) were The Belvedere Academy in Liverpool; Loreto College in St Albans; Wakefield Girls High School in Wakefield; and The Harvey Grammar School, Folkstone, Kent.

The day began with the 8 teams competing in group rounds to see who would make it through to the final head to head rounds. Littlegarth School in Colchester and Belvedere Academy in Liverpool took 4th place and Alwoodley Primary School in Leeds and Loreto College in St Albans took 3rd place for their age categories.

Edge Grove School in Watford and Ryde School with Upper Chine from Isle of Wight then battled it out for 1st place in the junior School category with Ryde School with Upper Chine from the Isle of Wight taking 1st place and then Wakefield Girls' High School in Wakefield and The Harvey Grammar School, Folkstone, Kent competed for the top spot in the senior category with Wakefield Girls' High School in Wakefield winning. The final nail-biting championship round then took place between:- the 2 1st place Schools with Ryde School with Upper Chine junior School from the Isle of Wight winning by just 1 point to be named What on Earth! Schools Quiz Challenge Champions 2024 and receiving The i Paper championship 2024 trophy.

The Belvedere Academy in Liverpool received a trophy, medals and a selection of What on Earth! books to take home.

Miss Doyle, a teacher at The Belvedere Academy said she enjoyed:- "Seeing all the teams working together and how competitive it is"

Gabriella, 13 years old, 1 of The Belvedere Academy team said she really enjoyed:- "the mixture of knowledge and problem solving"

Christopher Lloyd, Founder and CEO of What on Earth! Magazines and quiz master:- "Our 3rd national quiz final has been a huge success with a threefold increase in entries compared to last year, and I have been thoroughly impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm of our young quizzers during the last few weeks of preparation and competitions. A huge thanks to all the Schools across the UK who took part and congratulations to the finalists on the day and, of course, the overall quiz champions, Ryde School with Upper Chine from the Isle of Wight; I am already looking forward to making the quiz next year even bigger and better and finding our new UK Schools quiz champions for 2025!"

The quiz is free to enter for all junior, senior and independent Schools plus home educated children in levels KS2 and KS3 (aged 8; 14) and travel bursaries are available for the live final in London.

Last night, The Sovini Group's Learning and Development Manager, Christina Forshaw, joined Summer along with colleagues at the awards ceremony held at the Crown Plaza Hotel.

Competing against over 655 other apprentices, Summer's achievement is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and exceptional skills.

Summer Fitzmaurice commented:- “I'm so honoured to receive this award. It's been an amazing experience being part of The Sovini Group's apprenticeship program. I'm grateful for the support and guidance I've received from Sovini Property Services and the Group's Learning and Development team."
