Bringing Hollywood to Hugh Baird: Meet Moving Image Production lecturer Wayne Dineley

AT Hugh Baird University Centre, we pride ourselves on having a team of experienced lecturers who have notable industry links, up to date subject knowledge and extensive teaching experience. One of these lecturers is Wayne Dineley who teaches the sound design modules on our Moving Image Production degree level programmes. He is an accomplished sound designer and composer having his work featured in many prominent tv shows and Hollywood movie trailers including the trailer for Steven Spielberg's Ready Player 1.

Since becoming a self employed music composer in 2009, Wayne has worked on a wide range of projects, including animated films, TV commercials, games, and trailers. His compositions have been featured in major productions such as:- ABC's The Good Doctor, WWE Promotions, Netflix's Too Hot To Handle, ITV's The X Factor and the Warner Bros. Pictures movie The Communion Girl. His music has also been utilised in promotional materials for Trailers such as:- Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One, CW's Supergirl, CW's The Arrow and Pacific Rim: Uprising.

Wayne's journey into music began when he was younger, with his father introducing him to the guitar at the age of 6. He cites a key influence in his career being Danny Elfman. Originally drawn to the album soundtrack:- 'Darkman.' from there he bought most of Elfman's records and began studying them. Wayne then began to pursue formal training in music, earning a Higher National Diploma in Music, followed by a First Class BA Hons in Popular Music (Production). He then went on to obtain his master's in music and research at the University of Liverpool and is now working towards his PHD in Music for Film there too. You can currently find a new trailer on:- Facebook that features Wayne's music.

On top of his teaching role, Wayne has also been a self employed music composer for over 16 years. He started by reaching out to student film makers to gain some experience in music composition for film. He then began to reach out to people and network to build up his clientele. This work allowed him to work with many different studios such as:- chips and toon based in Singapore. These experiences laid the groundwork for building a client base and eventually gaining him work with high profile clients.

Wayne brings this wealth of experience into the classroom. In addition to being able to teach the technical aspects of sound design, he is also able to teach students how to set up their own business, build a personal brand and how to effectively network.
