Liverpool City Region, our nature needs your help!

THE Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has developed a Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) for the Liverpool City Region and they need your help...A public consultation is now taking place, looking at the proposed strategies.

The local nature recovery strategies that are soon to be implemented are nationwide (England) and are considered ambitious. These national spatial strategies have been designed to support the restoration and enhancement of nature.

The UK has lost nearly 50% of its biodiversity, placing it in the top 10% most nature depleted countries in the world. Nature provides a range of benefits to the people of our Region and even the world. Nature based solutions can improve our air and water quality, help us to achieve Net Zero, build resilience to climate change and provide access to thriving green spaces.

The new proposed strategy fir the Liverpool City Region outlines our most valuable existing habitats and presents priorities for reversing the decline in biodiversity. It is hoped that they also provide potential  opportunities for nature to recover and that they will for fill wider environmental goals in the places where they could have the biggest impact. However, the people behind the road maps to recovery say that it doesn't mean that this land will be protected or prevent other forms of land use.

A spokesperson for the project said:- "We have reached a crucial stage in the development of the Local Nature Recovery Strategy, and we want to hear your thoughts about our planned approach by:- Sunday, 6 April 2025.  No matter your background, your voice is crucial to our strategy development.  By sharing your views, you can help influence the final strategy and shape potential nature improvements in the Liverpool City Region. We would love you to take part. No body knows the local areas like the residents of the Liverpool City Region. By taking part in the consultation, you can let us know if we have missed any opportunities for nature recovery or if there is anything you think we should change."

As part of the strategy a local habitat map for the Liverpool City Region has been developed as a tool to guide nature recovery. This interactive map below shows core local nature sites (existing protected nature sites such as nature reserves) and opportunity areas. These are places where it is thought to have a potential opportunity to enhance, restore or create new habitat.

You can see the interactive map by clicking on here. But please remember that it's creators stress:- "This map is not a delivery plan, but a guide for how nature recovery could take place.  It does not give permission to carry out proposals or prevent any other form of land use.   As with any map that has relied on modelling, it can never be 100% accurate and any suggested opportunities will need to be ground truthed."

The public consultation is split into 2 sections.. The 1st being the:- "Local Nature Recovery Strategy Citizen Survey."  This survey is designed to capture feedback from citizens / residents. To take part in this survey, click  here. You have until it closes at:- 11.59pm, on:- Sunday, 6 April 2025 to have your say on this strategy.

The 2nd contribution Is the:- "Local Nature Recovery Strategy Stakeholder Survey." This survey is designed to capture feedback from those who are participating in a professional capacity. To take part in this survey, click here. This survey also closes at:- 11.59pm, on:- Sunday, 6 April 2025..

A series of public drop-in events will also take place across the Liverpool City Region where you'll have the chance to speak to a member of the team which has developed the draft:- 'Local Nature Recovery Strategy.'
