Poetry and Art Exhibition at The Floral Pavilion New Brighton

POETRY by local poet Eric Craven will be exhibited alongside original works by local artists in an exhibition at New Brighton's Floral Pavilion opening in March.

Love, Hurt and Whimsy: Conversations between:- Poetry and Art is coordinated by Mersey Arts Zone. The exhibition will contain 24 of Eric Craven's poems, alongside artworks by local artists which have been selected to share the sentiments of the poetry.

Eric's poems stem from personal experiences. Some have an origin in his childhood. Other poems are also thought-provoking as they portray more challenging life experiences to which others will be able to relate. Some reflect the times in which we currently live, while other tell simple stories. The exhibition title:- 'Love, Hurt and Whimsy' reflect the 3 themes into which Eric says all of his poems fall.

Eric said:- "I'm delighted to link with local artists in this way. I think there is an onus on us to try and appeal to our local community. Just like me the artists are local people. The poems in the exhibit are all really accessible; easy to read and understand. The poems of the famous Liverpool poets of the 1960s, including:- Roger McGough, were easily accessible as well. People related to them, found them amusing and thought provoking.”

The exhibition will be open at the Floral Pavilion, on:- Wednesday to Sunday, from:- Wednesday, 26 March to Sunday, 6 April 2025.

Everyone is welcome to attend the free launch event at 5pm on:- Wednesday, 26 March, which will feature live readings by Eric and live music by local folk artists. Eric will also be running a poetry workshop for anybody who is new to poetry writing and wants to develop their skills. ABOUT ERIC:-  Eric Craven was born in 1953. He is semi retired from education where he was a special School Headteacher and latterly 1 of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools. He now mainly spends his time supporting Headteachers of special Schools, cheering on Liverpool FC and writing poems. He published a series of his poems in December 2023 in a booked called Love, Hurt and Whimsy and has also read aloud some of his poems on Radio Merseyside. He regularly reads aloud his poems at the Hungry Horse Folk Club in Whitby near Ellesmere Port. Along with his friend, folk singer Sue Farley, he has recently produced a CD of nostalgic poems and folk songs, called Remember When. His poetry is accessible, easy to read, and he is keen to share it.

Counter Terrorism Policing initiative expands to the North West as new Police Now Officers are attested

A pilot initiative which sees talented graduates recruited into Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) has now expanded to the North West, as a cohort of new Greater Manchester Police trainee detectives were attested at Police Now's national academy on the 17 March.

The 8 new Officers will help bolster the UK's protection against serious harm and terrorist threat, as they are supported to become highly trained, qualified detectives on Police Now's two-year National Detective Programme.

The latest data released by the Home Office shows that more people have been arrested for terrorism related offences in 2024 than in the 4 years previously. Officers on this specialist stream of the programme will move into CTP North West teams towards the end of their second year of training, where they will work to prevent, deter, and investigate terrorist activity alongside their experienced colleagues.

Detective Chief Superintendent Sarah Kenwright, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North West, said:- "The atteStation of our new trainee detectives is an exciting step on their journey to becoming fully qualified detectives in Counter Terrorism Policing North West (CTPNW). Being attested is a significant milestone in a police Officer's career and it is a huge honour so I hope our new colleagues will feel a strong sense of pride today. Additionally, it brings with it an expectation that you will live up to the high standards rightly expected by the public. This is the 1st time we have taken direct entry detectives in CTPNW so we're looking forward to welcoming this intake as we seek to bolster our efforts to protect national security. It's also very positive to see such a high proportion of females in this intake as we continue to strive to make our service 1 which is more representative of the communities we serve and, therefore, more operationally effective as we bring together a broader range of lived experiences. The benchmark for securing a place on the Police Now programme was extremely high and we're confident that the successful candidates will bring a strong mix of experience, skills, knowledge and ideas which will be hugely beneficial for us and, ultimately, the public.”

The CTP stream piloted last year in the Met's SO15; with 1 Met trainer crediting the pilot for his:- 'renewed sense of enthusiasm and optimism for policing'; and has expanded to include:- the North West and West Midlands CTP Regions this year, thanks to the pilot's success.

Police Now particularly focuses on recruiting and training those who had not considered a career in policing before and consistently brings more women into the service than policing achieves nationally. 75% of these new CTP North West recruits identify as women; higher than the policing national average of 35.4%.
