Edge Hill launches behavioural data service to give small businesses a competitive edge

ADGE Hill University is offering small businesses in the North West a new data driven service to help them grow and gain a competitive edge.

The Department of Psychology wants SMEs, charities and the public sector to be able to make decisions with confidence, backed by evidence provided through its Behavioural Data Service (BDS) which will help them understand their customers better.

According to the Office for National Statistics, £50 billion was spent on Research and Development (R&D) in the UK in 2023, with the biggest share going to scientific research. However, research is often out of reach for smaller organisations, putting them at a disadvantage.

The Edge Hill team aim to give SMEs access to data-driven R&D opportunities which are standard among large corporations with big budgets and specialised staff.

Professor Linda Kaye, Associate Head of the Department for Psychology (Knowledge Exchange and Marketing), said:- "We are excited to share our expertise with businesses and organisations to bring about economic and societal impact. Our new Behavioural Data Service is part of the wide range of services we offer at Edge Hill to support businesses in all aspects of their work, from strategy and marketing to operational management and HR. We do this through understanding human behaviour; that of individuals and within organisations."

The new service will work on an 'opt-in' basis so businesses can access data expertise as needed to avoid the expense a full-time expert.

The BDS team can support business improvement in many areas, including:- product development, customer service and the customer journey; the 1st contact potential customers have with a business through to their final purchase.

Their specialisms range from neuroscience to behavioural science, with the skills to design and evaluate research data. Their expertise includes:-

  • Ethical data management.

  • Data Insights.

  • Data Analysis and Interpretation.

  • Evaluation Services.

  • Neuroimaging Analysis (interpreting data from images of the brain and nervous system)

  • Natural Language Processing (the use of AI to understand language).

The Behavioural Data Service is the 1st consultation service to launch from Edge Hill's Knowledge Exchange. It's part of a range of business and industry services the University offers, including Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, bespoke continuing professional development and specialised facilities.
