Southport has marked 75th Anniversary of VJ Day

COMPARED to VE Day, VJ Day has often been more low key, but the 75th Anniversary, on 15 August 2020, has been a  very muted affair, due to the Covid19 Pandemic.  As with VE Day Commemorations, many events have been cancelled and others massively scaled back. Some areas  were able to hold 2 minute silences, at cenotaphs and war memorials, just like those around the world.

We joined a small service run by the Royal British Legion, SAFFA and the Burma Star Assassination at the Town's War Memorial. The event was lead by Leyland Road Methodist Church and Church of England Revds Sonya Marshall. Also in attendance was the Southport MP Damian Moore.

You can watch the full service via the YouTube video bellow....

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning.
We will remember them.

Laurence Binyon, The London Times (1914)

The surrender of Imperial Japan was announced by Japanese Emperor Hirohito on 15 August 1945, when hostilities between all the nations involved in World War 2 ended, becoming known as Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) But, it was not until the instrument of surrender was officially signed on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, until 2 September 1945, that would formally mark the end of World War 2.

Did you know?  VJ Day is also sometimes called:- Victory in the Pacific Day, and VP Day.

VJ Day socially distanced street party

OVER the Covid-19 Lockdown, a Southport Town Centre road, Seabank Road, held socially distance (lockdown compliant) weekly events from their gardens. On VJ Day, they all again joined in to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War 2.  After being invited, we popped, over as the main organisers got ready for the roads event and took these few pictures.

We would love to know if you or anyone you know also held any events to mark this extremely important, but often overlooked event in history.  Please email us to:- News24@SouthportReporter.Com with any information on this topic, as we would like to hear from you, especially if you celebrated it back in 1945.
