Change.org
have won an important concession for EU citizens
IN an announcement in
the House of Lords, the UK Government has confirmed that EU
citizens will be able to stand as candidates and vote in Local
Elections, within England, in 2021, also EU citizens will also
be able to vote in local elections. Not only that, but EU
citizens will also be able to stand and vote in elections for
Police and Crime Commissioners, within England and Wales, in
2021. In Scotland, EU citizens' right to vote for the Scottish
Parliament and in local elections is protected because the
franchise is a devolved power. However, in the rest of the UK,
New Europeans had raised concerns that the Government might now
remove the franchise from EU citizens post Brexit.
Change.org said:- "Our concerns had been fuelled by the
Government's pursuit of bi-lateral agreements on voting with
some member states, like Poland. We will also never forget the
disgraceful way the Government denied the vote to over 1.7 EU
citizens in the European elections in 2019 and we continue to
pursue our demand for a public inquiry. After 2021, the position
is still unclear. The Government could remove the franchise from
EU citizens not covered by bi-lateral agreements without even
the need for a debate in Parliament. That is why we invite you
to join New Europeans and support our campaigns to secure the
franchise for EU citizens in perpetuity. The Government's
confirmation that EU citizens will be able to stand and vote in
local elections in 2021 is an important concession. The fact
that we are constantly campaigning and drawing attention to the
issue of #DeniedMyVote and the future voting rights of EU
citizens in the UK is having a huge impact and we fight on. None
of this would be possible without Change.org members support. If
you have not signed the the petition and support for our
campaign, please do son
here and also please share the
petition."
