2003 was a year of controversy and celebration.
By Patrick Trollope BA (Hons) LBPPA

2003 HAS been a year of controversy and celebration. In the first week of March, as the world was looking at the possibilities of War in Iraq, the Labour Party held its North West Regional Conference in the Floral Hall. Outside a mass of protesters gathered as John Reid and John Prescott gave press briefings to the local and international press, who had descended on Southport. By the middle of March, nationally, the headlines were dominated by Iraq and Saddam Hussein. The effects of 11 September 2001, still uppermost in the thoughts of the US Administration, lead to the Coalition forces of UK and US invading Iraq in March 2003. LINK  This, despite not having secured a new UN resolution authorising such action. One consequence of that was the gathering of anti- war protesters across the country and in London, calling for an end to war. This was followed by protestations against the occupation of Iraq. Southport Dad, Major Titchener, who had been married for almost six years, was killed in an ambush in Iraq during August. He served in the Royal Military Police and left a pregnant wife and a two year old son called Matheson. Even on at the Remembrance Service in Southport in November, a child was dressed in army uniform, as he wanted to represent his Dad who was still in Iraq. In December, questions still flew around as to the effects and justification of the war. On the 14 December, Saddam Hussein was captured by US forces.
