Royal Visit
to Liverpool Central Library

THE Liverpool Central
Library was re-opened to the public on Friday, 17 May
2013, but now it has been
official opened, on Monday, 23 September 2013, by HRH The Earl
of Wessex, Prince Edward in a special plaque unveiling. The
Prince was taken on a tour of the refurbished City gem to see
the results of buildings £50million
restoration, for himself.
Leading the tour was Liverpool’s Head of Libraries Joyce Little,
who was retiring after 45 years to the day, of service to the
Library, leaving a stunning legacy for the City and region, as
she also worked on the plans more than 10 years to transform one
of Liverpool's most significant and celebrated buildings. Unlike
most Library's, the royal visitor and representatives from all
organisations who played a key role in the refurbishment, even
got a chance to go out on a amazing new public roof terrace,
which offers stunning views over the City Centre. They also
visited the newly opened Oak Room which houses the rare Audubon
books, that until recently, have not been accessible to the
public. But that was not all as the library also holds the
Liverpool Records Office and the Prince noted that he was
"Extremely impressed" by the building’s ability to allow
access to the public to see the rare items it houses. As part of
the tour, Prince Edward was also treated to performances from
The Liverpool Signing Choir and the Liverpool Community Choir,
as the library even holds a music lending service! Along the way
he also had the opportunity to meet youngsters who are making
the most of the new facilities, commenting to one: - "This
is outstanding isn't it!" After the tour ended, the
group headed into the stunning Picton Reading Room to conduct
the official unveiling of the plaque which will be located
outside the library very soon. But the Prince also took the
opportunity to also acknowledge the dedication of Joyce Little
to the Library service and to the building. From what we could
see the Prince
was extremely interested in the building and its people, even
commenting to some of the tour members:- "You should all
be extremely proud to be part of its development," as he
walked around the building! Email us via:-
