University of
Central Lancashire to host 21st Century Human for inaugural
Humanities Festival
THE University of Central
Lancashire (UCLan) is hosting an event to participate in Being
Human, the UK's first national festival of the humanities, which
involves discussion, debate, public lectures, workshops and
opportunities to meet researchers, made possible by a grant from the
festival organisers, the School of Advanced Study, University of
London, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and
the British Academy.
Following a successful application, UCLan has been awarded funding
to hold the event during Being Human festival week, 15 November to 23 November
2014. 21st Century Human will champion the excellence of humanities
research being undertaken in Preston and help to demonstrate the
vitality and relevance of this today.
Selected from over 100 applications, the grant will help the
university bring together researchers and the local public to engage
with their own interpretation of the humanities.
21st Century Human
will be part of a national programme of activities which aim to
inform, extend and ignite contemporary thinking and imagination
around the humanities.
Dr Jo Heaton-Marriott, UCLan's Public Engagement Manager, said:-
"We are really excited to be part of this national event. We've had
success with the Lancashire Science Festival and hope that 21st
Century Human can become a similar annual event in the University
calendar. We plan to take research off the University Campus, and
out to our local community, and are looking forward to working with
partners to achieve this."
Currently in its first year, Being Human is led by the School of
Advanced Study in participation with the Arts and Humanities
Research Council and the British Academy with the participation of
arts and cultural organisations and universities across the UK.
The festival programme will focus on activities that make humanities
research accessible to the general public and demonstrate the role
of the humanities in the cultural, intellectual, political and
social life of the UK.
36 grants have been awarded to universities and arts and cultural
organisations across the UK to participate in the 9 days of
festival events taking place across the UK, from Truro to Orkney,
Swansea to Belfast and Norwich to Liverpool.

Simultaneous
events to raise funds for Guide Dogs
DOGS and their humans are needed to take part
in sponsored walks across the UK to raise vital funds for visually
impaired people. Dogs Unite is a series of sponsored walks
where the dogs are the stars. Raising vital funds for Guide Dogs,
it's the only event of its kind where the dog is sponsored to take
part.
The main event will take place on 14 June 2014 at the Queen
Elizabeth Olympic Park in London and Guide Dogs needs people across
the UK to join in on the day by getting together with friends and
family to do a sponsored walk in the local park. Walkers are
encouraged to join in on June 14th, but events can also be held on
different dates.
Katie Seabourne knows how much difference a Guide Dog can make. Mum
to 7 year old Joseph, who has anaridea, glaucoma, cataracts and a
nystagmus, she says of his Guide Dogs Buddy Dog, "Kasper has
been wonderful for Joseph! We're so happy and cannot thank Guide
Dogs enough. The transformation we've seen in Joseph is wonderful
and who knows what his future will hold now."
Community fundraising campaign Manager for Guide Dogs, Pam White,
explains, "Guide Dogs give blind and partially sighted people
freedom and independence and really do change lives. We want to get
as many people as possible to join in with a sponsored Dogs Unite
walk on 14 June so that we can keep making that difference."
Give dogs in your area a chance to be heroes for the day by
organizing an exciting Dogs Unite walk to help children like Joseph,
and the extra person that goes blind in the UK every hour. They'll
even get a free doggy superhero cape to wear!
