Southport's
Christmas Baubles damaged by high wind
THE brand new Christmas
Lights on Nevill Street, in Southport, were badly affected with the
high winds that had been lashing the UK, over Wednesday, 10 December
and Thursday, 11 December 2014. The first to go were the cables
holding some of the massive Christmas Balls next to the Grand Palace
Chinese Restaurant. The main connecting cords and the electric
contacts snapped in the gale force winds at around 8:30pm, leaving
them swinging dangerously around. The Police were contacted by
members of the public, at one stage, as it looked like they might
drop on to the road or smash the Victorian Glass Canopy over the
pavement outside Mike's Newsagents. One of the Balls was getting
very close at time to smashing the windows of the flat above the
Newsagents! But the safety lines held firm. Other damage was to the
lights on the lampposts outside Leos, also on Neville Street, along
with the Balls suspended above the road outside Silcox. The road was
not closed to pedestrians or cars throughout, and the lights were
repaired at around 10:30pm on the 11 December 2014. The giant
Christmas baubles on Houghton Street, Southport were also hit with
one giant Christmas bauble crashing down onto the road, outside NFU
Mutual. Some are now asking if they are safe:- "Should the
decorations come down now before the next storm hits them? These are
dangerous. The giant baubles swinging in the wind should have been
better attached. What would have happened if they had fallen? It was
very lucky that no one was injured!" one of the local
businesses commented. "I don't want to be named, as I will
appear to be a Grinch, but we all wanted new lights and we are
pleased we got them. The only problem is these do not seem to be
correct for the environment they are located in. But it was
exceptionally bad weather!" he added. Were you affected by
the high winds? Did your property or any one you know suffer any

Our Lady Of
Lourdes Catholic Nursery and Primary School unveils results of a
£50k Energy Makeover
ON 12 December 2014, pupils
at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Nursery and Primary School, located
on Grantham Road,
Southport, Merseyside, met with local MP John Pugh today to reveal
the results of a £50k British Gas Energy Makeover, won earlier in
2014.
In the spring, British Gas offered schools the chance
to win an Energy Makeover worth £50k to help improve the energy
performance of their school. Our Lady of Lourdes entered the
competition to teach their young pupils about sustainability and
energy conservation. The school was built in the 1930's and whilst
it is a beautiful and distinctive building, they were in need of an
energy upgrade. Our Lady of Lourdes won the prize for work that the
school had previously carried out in relation to eco-issues, and for
their ideas going forward.
A range of exciting new technology has now been
installed, including solar panels, lighting, boiler burner controls
and a hot water pipe insulation. A new interactive display screen,
which presents live information such as energy generation from the
solar panels, weather and energy saving tips is displayed to the
children, teachers and parents.
The school will now expect to see a reduction in its
electriCity costs of 9% and heating fuel usage by 5%, resulting in
an estimated 10tonnes of Carbon savings. Last year, the British Gas
Generation Green programme invested £1.6 million installing energy
saving equipment in schools, saving an estimated £100,000 a year on
energy bills.
Head teacher Mrs Maureen Hillsdon said:- "We
are delighted to have made Our Lady of Lourdes a more energy
efficient place for the children to learn. The money that we're
saving can now be used for other educational activities and school
equipment. The interactive display screen allows for the children to
see how much energy we're saving in a really engaging way and our
new technology will be used to teach children about energy
efficiency for years to come."
Southport's John Pugh MP said:- "It's fantastic to see how the
energy makeover will help the children learn about energy and how it
will improve the schools energy efficiency. I welcome this type of
investment and schemes such as Generation Green can make a real
difference to the school. It's great to see their energy bills will
be reduced as a result."
Abi Robins, Director of Corporate Responsibility at
British Gas, said:- "We're glad the children and teachers love
their new energy saving technology and they enjoy learning about the
benefits of being energy efficient. The investment will provide a
lasting legacy of energy and carbon savings to the school for the
next generation of young people."
