City to light up for Three Queens
LIVERPOOL'S waterfront will be seen in a new light when the City
celebrates the 175th Anniversary of Cunard in May 2015.
Plans are underway to mark what is being described as the most spectacular ever
gathering of Cunard's Three Queens when they sail in to their spiritual home and
meet on the Mersey on Monday, 25 May 2015.
Activities will take place across the weekend, from 23 May to 25 May 2015, to
entertain the hundreds of thousands of people expected to descend on the City
for this potentially once in a lifetime experience.
As part of the programme, state of the art projections are set to bring to life
some of the City's iconic Waterfront Buildings. The content is still in
development, however as part of the three night show, there will be an element
called Sea of Faces which will result in hundreds of faces of people who live
in, work in, play in or just love Liverpool beamed on to the buildings.
An announcement will be made in the spring about how people can get involved
with this exciting feature.
The Colour Project is the company behind the projections and has the reputation
of being one of the country's leading video mapping and design companies. Along
with the City Council, they will also be working closely with Liverpool arts
organisation Hope Street Limited to produce the showcase.
Assistant Mayor and Cabinet Member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy
Simon, said:- "In every sense of the word, we had a giant year last year
in terms of our event programme, and Liverpool is maintaining that momentum as
we prepare for yet another momentous year for the City. There's still 5 months
to go before the 3 monarchs of the sea head for the River Mersey, and yet there
is already an air of excitement about their arrival, not just in the City but
across the UK and the rest of the world. It's rare for the three vessels to be
in the same place at the same time, but it will be the first time the Queens
will converge on our majestic waterfront and it's guaranteed to be the Kodak
moment of 2015. As with all the events we stage, we want to make sure there are
things for people to see and do across the weekend and it's great news we are
working with such a creative and technically advanced partner such as The Colour
Project. Their work will light up one of the most recognisable waterfronts in
the world and will add another dimension to what is set to be an unforgettable
weekend."
Carl Miller from The Colour Project, said:- "This event will transform the
rich waterfront canvas into an exciting and engaging visual display and provide
a fitting punctuation to this momentous occasion. This is a great opportunity to
explore the spirit of Liverpool, its heritage and culture along with highlights
from the extensive history of Cunard. We are delighted to be working with
Liverpool City Council and Hope Street to create this unique celebration."
The Three Queens weekend kick-starts the 6 week, 1 Magnificent City programme,
which culminates in July with a weekend of events directed by acclaimed designer
Wayne Hemingway.
This weekend (with 4 July 2015 being the key date) marks the first transatlantic
voyage of Britannia back in 1840 and so a series of activities will celebrate
the glamour and excitement of cruise travel looking at everything from fashion
to food, involving everyone from schoolchildren and residents through to
businesses and retailers in Liverpool.
Details of the programme will be announced in the near future.
Cunard Director Angus Struthers said:- "We have been delighted by the
intense interest, sense of pride and positive feeling in Liverpool for Cunard
and its 175th anniversary next year. We are looking forward to celebrating with
the City when the Three Queens sail into the Mersey for the very first time next
May and welcome the plans to complement the spectacular arrival of the Cunard
fleet with activities ashore. 2015 looks to be a very exciting year for Cunard
and Liverpool, its spiritual home."

Cruise liner facility set to expand
LIVERPOOL'S Cruise Liner facility is to be expanded to enable it to deal with
larger vessels; while the Council looks at options for a permanent building. A
report to the Cabinet on Friday, 9 January 2015, has recommended that the
Council purchases the temporary structure which it is currently renting, and
extends it so that it can deal with up to 1,800 passengers per vessel. In the
meantime, the Council will continue to explore the building of a permanent
facility on the waterfront.
The improvements will see:-
► 400 new square metres of floor space to deal with 350 extra passengers / 700
bags.
► New indoor toilets.
► Permanent early arrivals area for passengers on smaller ships so people
embarking don't have to wait for others to disembark.
► Improvements to the gateway which links the terminal to the main pontoon
berth.
The terminal has been a huge success since it opened in 2012, with 54 ships
expected this year bringing with them over 80,000 passengers; that is a 40%
increase on last year.
It is expected to contribute around £5.8 million to the City's visitor economy
in 2015, up from £1.3 million when it was a port of call destination.
Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, Cabinet member for regeneration, said:- "We knew the
turnaround facility would be a huge success and the increase in demand we have
seen since it opened means that we are now pretty much at capaCity. It makes
economic sense for us to purchase the building as, even with the improvements we
are carrying out, the cost is less than half the amount of continuing to rent
it. This will put us in a position to continue the success of the cruise liner
terminal while we look at options for a more permanent facility in the longer
term."
Assistant Mayor and Cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy
Simon, added:- "It is going to be an amazing year for the Cruise Liner Terminal
with the arrival of the three Cunard Queens on the River Mersey and Cunard
recreating the original transatlantic voyage of Britannia of 175 years ago. The
work we are carrying out will mean we are able to enhance the experience of
passengers, who we know already rate the City highly as a cruise destination."
In November 2014, Liverpool was named the UK's best port of call for the 2nd
year running by the world's largest cruise review website; Cruise Critic, which
is a sister site of Trip Advisor. The awards highlight excellence in cruise
travel, and are selected by an international panel of cruise journalists in 18
different categories, recognising the very best cruise lines, ships and ports.
On Liverpool's win, the Cruise Critic editors commented:- "Much of what
Liverpool has to offer cruise-ship visitors is right in the City centre,
alongside the waterfront where ships dock. The revitalised Albert Dock houses
numerous restaurants and attractions; like the Beatles Story museum; and the
adjacent billion pound Liverpool One retail park is the UK's largest open-air
retail complex."
The highlight of the 2015 cruise season will be 2 very special events to
celebrate Cunard Cruise Line's 175th Anniversary.
On 25 May 2015, the Cunard fleet will arrive on the Mersey, creating an
unprecedented 3 Queens spectacle in Liverpool and a once-in-a-lifetime event
that will make maritime history. Activities will take place across the weekend
(from 23 May to 25 May 2015) to entertain the hundreds of thousands of people expected to
descend on the City for this potentially once in a lifetime experience.
On 4 July 2015, the Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2 will return to Liverpool to
celebrate Britannia's transatlantic departure exactly 175 years earlier.
