From thousands of photos to 1 - Carl's an Insta-Hit
AN image taken of Liverpool Waterfront,
by a 44 year old vehicle technician, has been chosen to represent the site of
the world's oldest commercial enclosed
dock during its 300th Anniversary. The picture
of Liverpool's iconic:- 'Three Graces' by night with lights
reflected in the River Mersey was taken by Carl Yeates, from Walton. His image
was chosen from over a thousand submissions from across the world as part of a
competition to find an image which epitomises the beauty of the UNESCO World
Heritage Site.
Launched by Liverpool Waterfront Business Partnership, members of the public
were asked to post images taken of or at Liverpool Waterfront to Instagram,
using the hashtag:- #WaterfrontReflections. The first post from the public was
posted by celebrity photographer Conor McDonnell whose image of Kanye West and
Kim Kardashian's wedding kiss became the most liked picture on Instagram ever.
Liverpool born Conor was also on the judging panel to choose the winning image.
Carl, a married father of 3, said:- "I am absolutely over the moon that I
have won. I 1st got into photography when I got proper camera about 3 years ago.
I like taking all kinds of different shots when I can, especially of landscapes
and architecture, but I like to mix it up to keep things interesting. I love
taking pictures of the Waterfront because of all the changes it has seen over
the years, and I like to show a different perspective on the area. The light and
the reflections from the water make great photos."
The competition was launched to showcase the iconic Liverpool Waterfront ahead
of a landmark year. 2015 marks several anniversaries for Liverpool Waterfront,
including that of the 1st transatlantic voyage by Cunard Cruise Line Liverpool
(175 years) and of the world's first commercial enclosed wet dock (300 years).
Sue Grindrod, director and chair of Liverpool Waterfront Business Partnership,
says:- "We were absolutely thrilled with the number of entries the
competition attracted, and not just from people in Liverpool, but from all over
the world. The images people took were really stunning and we were so impressed
with the creativity. Liverpool Waterfront is a UNESCO World Heritage site,
acknowledging that it is an area of outstanding beauty, and the photos that we
saw certainly did it justice. We loved Carl's shot for the way he captured the
beauty and the ambience of the Waterfront, showcasing the old and new, and the
clever use of the light reflecting on the water was really atmospheric."
Carl's prize includes a package of Waterfront experiences as well as an
exclusive Liverpool Waterfront portrait taken by Conor McDonnell, who has
photographed celebrities including Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding and Calvin Harris.

Update on Liverpool City Centre Night Club
Police Operation
MERSEYSIDE Police have confirmed that
10 of the 11 people arrested as part of an on going operation targeting the
supply of Class A and B drugs at licensed
premises in Liverpool City Centre were
charged with drug related offences, on Thursday, 26 February 2015.
► Andrew Mayberry, 36, Toxteth, was charged with conspiracy to supply a Class A
drug (Cocaine).
► Aitor Miralles, 21, from Liverpool City Centre, was charged with the being
concerned in the supply of a Class B drug (MCAT).
Both have since appear at Liverpool City Magistrates' Court, on Friday, 27
February 2015.
► Harry Gagen, 19, from Mossley Hill, was charged with supply a Class A drug
(Cocaine).
► Tom Parker, 20, from Walton, was charged with the supply and offering to
supply a Class A drug (MDMA).
► Dominic Holt, 18, from Allerton, was charged with supply a Class A drug (MDMA).
All 3 have been bailed to appear at Liverpool City Magistrates' Court on 6 March
2015.
► James Green, 19, also from Walton, was charged with Class A drug supply
(Cocaine) and offering to supply Class A (Cocaine) and B drugs (MCAT) .
► Declan Griffiths, 19, from West Derby was been charged with Class A drug
supply (Cocaine).
► Jason Wong, 22, from Runcorn was been charged with the supply and offering to
supply a Class A drug (MDMA).
► Peter Curlett, 26, from the Liverpool City Centre area, was charged with
supplying a Class B drug (MCAT).
► Shaun Hayes, 27, from Bootle, was been charged with conspiracy to supply a
Class A drug (Cocaine).
All 5 have since been bailed to appear at Liverpool City Magistrates' Court, on
16 March 2015.
Plus a 25 year old man, who was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the
supply of drugs, has been bailed pending further enquiries. |

Industry calls on next
Government to embed growth plans
BRITTAN'S manufacturers have set the
next Government 4 key priorities to build on and secure the economic recovery,
or risk failing to build the better balanced economy the UK urgently needs.
The priorities, laid out in a business manifesto:- "Securing a
manufacturing renaissance" published by EEF, the manufacturers' organisation,
outline how government must work consistently across departments, across all
localities and with the UK's international partners to drive forward a programme
for growth."
In order to achieve this, the UK Government needs to punch its weight at the
heart of a reformed and economically successful European Union.
Darrell Matthews, North West Region Director at EEF, says:- "While the
last 5 years have been about recovery, the next 5 must be about delivering a
better balanced economy. Some important groundwork has been laid and it is vital
the next Government builds on what has worked to date. Achieving a true
rebalancing of the economy, however, was never going to be easy. It will involve
tough choices and will not happen over the lifetime of a single Parliament. It
is vital therefore the next Government recognises this and sets lofty ambitions
to provide the long-term certainty that is necessary for manufacturing
businesses to invest recruit and grow in the UK."
According to EEF, there remains much to do to restore the public finances,
improve productivity and secure real wage growth. In particular, the next
Government should set an ambition for measurable improvements in productivity
relative to our international competitors, a step change in investment behaviour
in the private sector and a marked improvement in the UK's trade performance.
EEF believes this can only be achieved by setting stretching goals and
performance measures to ensure spending decisions are delivering the best
outcomes for business and the wider public. In response, it has set the next
Government the following 4 ambitions with specific policy principles underlining
each:-
1. A more productive and flexible labour force:-
► An increase in the take up of maths and science at key stages 4 and 5.
► Reform of university funding to increase applications for STEM degrees.
► Employers given control of Apprenticeship funding.
► Industry given control of developing and retaining vocational qualifications.
► A new 'High Skill STEM' visa should be introduced.
► Employment legislation reforms should be subject to rigorous cost benefit
analysis.
► The 'Fit for Work' service should improve tax reliefs for private medical
treatments which help employees return to work.
2. Improving infrastructure:-
► The establishment of a permanent, independent UK Infrastructure Authority.
► Make investment in the strategic road network and broadband key priorities.
► Alternative funding plans must be found for local and strategic road networks
to ensure they are on a sustainable footing beyond 2020.
► The UK's energy infrastructure should be renewed to maximise opportunities for
UK supply chains.
► The EU Emissions Trading Scheme must be reformed to prevent carbon leakage.
► UK domestic decarbonisation policy must be reformed to deliver the required
energy efficiency improvements.
3. Reducing the cost of doing business:-
► The carbon price floor should be removed as soon as fiscally possible.
► The compensation scheme for renewable electriCity should be introduced as soon
as possible.
► New targets should be set for deregulation, including for regulations
originating in the EU.
► The recommendations of the Competition and Market Authority review of SME
banking should be implemented.
► A long term commitment to fund the British Business Bank.
► The establishment of an Office for Resource Management.
4. Better support for growing businesses:-
► Funding for both Innovate UK and Science should be protected.
► Funding for the HVM Catapult Centres must be maintained.
► Support for exporters must be maintained through UKTI funding.
► Introduce incentives to capture value from waste.
► Establish a centre for remanufacturing innovation and introduce incentives to
encourage resource efficiency.
