Sefton has
held its annual Holocaust Memorial
HOLOCAUST Memorial Day
is hosted each year on 27 January. The day is a national event
in the United Kingdom dedicated to the remembrance of the
victims of The Holocaust and events are often held around this
date to commemorate the victims and survivors of the Holocaust
and Nazi persecutions as well as other worldwide genocides that
have taken place. This
year’s service for the Sefton area took place on Sunday, 26
January 2014 at Christ Church, Southport, on Lord Street. The
memorial ceremony was attended by Southport Branch of
Association of Jewish ex-servicemen and women (AJEX) members,
the Mayor of Sefton Cllr. Alf Doran along with John Pugh, MP for
Southport, as well as Sefton Councillors and Chief Officers,
along with local school children and members of the public. This
was the 10th time the Town has paid tribute in
this way. The date was picked as it was nearest Sunday to
Holocaust Memorial Day and the 65th anniversary of the
liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. At the service, which was
attended by many of differing faiths, a minute’s silence was
held and a Memorial Candle was lit. Presentations were also
given by students from Runshaw Collage, Sefton Unison and St
Johns Primary School Ainsdale and a representative from the
Imperial War Museum. Rabbi Ariel Abel and Stuart Reid also lead
the prayers. The Southport Sea Cadets also actively took part
and at the end took the memorial box out of the church to the
Town's War Memorial, and the Holocaust Memorial Plaque. St John
Ambulance also attened. After
the service a book of condolence was made available for people
to sign, in the Southport Arts Centre. To see more
