WITH many worried about the 'unintended
consequences' of lockdown feared, including the rising
mental health issues and unemployment, it is no surprise that
education would be included within this list and lots of
theories as to what will be done to get the UK's educational
establishments back on track. As a result, in the UK
Government's daily televised briefing, the Secretary of State
for Education, Gavin Williamson, clearly stated that there were
"no plans" to open Schools over the summer
holiday, from following "unhelpful speculation"
within some of the UK media outlets. He said that 5
"tests" must be met before Schools and any other
education establishments could reopen. Outlining those 5
tests Mr Williamson said:- "1st we must protect the NHS's
ability to cope, and be sure that it can continue to provide
critical care and specialist treatment right across the whole of
the United Kingdom. The 2nd, we need to see daily death rates
from Coronavirus coming down. 3rd, we need to have reliable data
that shows the rate of infection is decreasing to manageable
levels. The 4th, we need to be confident that testing capacity
and PPE is being managed, with supply able to meet, not just
today's demand, but future demand. And the 5th, perhaps the most
crucially, we need to be confident that any changes we do make
will not risk a 2nd peak of infections."
