COMPETITION SET TO GO WITH A BANG

SCHOOL children from Merseyside are being given a once in a lifetime opportunity to blow up a building as part of an initiative organised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

The competition will be launched at an event to be held at Manchester's GMEX on the 18 November to celebrate the North West construction industry.

One lucky winner will spend the day with Yorkshire-based Controlled Demolition Group and detonate the charges that demolish a building which has been earmarked for levelling.

The contest is designed to stimulate interest in the region's construction and surveying industries, which are currently suffering from a lack of
skilled recruits.

Guy Lawson, regional director for the RICS said:- "The North West has seen a significant increase in major construction projects over the last few years.

To lift developments off the drawing board requires skilled individuals. Our concern is that landmark projects could be a thing of the past if the
industry fails to recruit sufficient skilled workers.

Our aim with this competition is to engage the children at a time when they are thinking about their further education and inform them of the varied
opportunities that the construction industry can offer."

Last year the Construction Industry Training Board revealed that the industry would require over 380,000 new recruits over the next five years.

RICS accredited courses are available at UMIST, The University of Salford, The University of Central Lancashire and Liverpool John Moores University.

Guy Lawson said:- "Many children aren't aware that you can study for a career in construction and that the courses can enable them to gain the
qualifications to help them progress in the industry.

With this competition we are hoping to grab their attention and fire their interest in the industry in general."

To enter the competition children must answer a set of simple questions and state which is the best building in the North West and which building in the
region should be demolished and why.

The winner will be announced in Spring 2004.
